Implants

What are implants?

When a tooth is missing or can no longer be repaired, the best permanent option is a dental implant. Implants are the ideal cosmetic solution for missing teeth in highly visible areas so you can preserve your smile. They also provide an excellent replacement for teeth further back in the mouth as they provide the support and stability needed to maintain a normal bite. A titanium implant acts as a replacement for the natural tooth root. A porcelain tooth attached to the titanium implant creates a solution that both looks and functions just like a natural tooth.

Reasons for dental implants:
  • To replace missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth

  • To restore a patient’s confident smile

  • To restore chewing and speech

  • To support a bridge or fixed denture, making them more secure and comfortable

  • To resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by teeth shifting into the missing tooth space

What does getting dental implants involve?

This procedure normally includes four or five visits to the dentist until the treatment is completed.

Step 1. Before the procedure

Dr Kaunitz will perform a thorough examination and obtain x-rays of the jaw and teeth to evaluate bone, gum tissue and spacing available for an implant.

Step 2. Installing the implant

First, the implant is placed by our specialist oral surgeon. At this time, a temporary tooth will be attached so that you to eat and function like normal almost immediately. The implant will need several months to integrate with the bone before the next step is taken. You should expect to be able to work the day after having the implant placed.

It is important to note that if your bone is receding, you may first need bone grafting before the implant can be placed.

Step 3. Attaching the new crown

Once the implant has integrated, the final step is the placement of the permanent porcelain tooth. The new tooth is installed for life. No additional treatment is needed.

Step 4. End result

You should expect the new tooth to provide excellent aesthetic, stability, and comfort. Good oral hygiene, eating habits and regular dental visits will ensure a long life for your new implant.
