Thumb sucking

Thumb sucking by babies and toddlers is natural and shouldn’t be a cause for concern. However, if your child continues to suck his or her thumb when adult teeth start to appear (usually around ages four or five), it can affect dental development and could result in your child needing braces.

Pre-orthodontic trainers

Suitable for children between six and 10 years of age, a trainer is a non-intrusive appliance that can be used to stop persistent thumb sucking and other habits like tongue thrusting and mouth breathing, which can also cause dental development problems.

If you are worried about your child’s thumb sucking, make an appointment to see one of our friendly dentists.
