Teeth Whitening

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a popular and safe way to lighten and brighten the natural shade of your teeth. At Cremorne Dental Clinic, we offer both in-office teeth whitening and take-home teeth whitening kits for our patients. Whether you want to restore your natural tooth shade or have even whiter teeth than ever before, we can help.

What does in-office teeth whitening involve?

In-office teeth whitening involves the precise application of light-activated whitening gel to the teeth, which changes their colour by breaking down the molecular bonds cause internal and external tooth discolouration. The light activated technology is used to accelerate the whitening process and improve the results. Because a single treatment is typically all that is needed, this is ideal for anyone looking for immediate results. At Cremorne Dental Clinic, we have the two most popular in-chair teeth whitening systems available on the market -- Philips Zoom and SmartBleach 3LT -- Dr Kaunitz can help recommend which system is best for you. For some great results from our patients, see the gallery below.

Is teeth whitening safe?

In-office teeth whitening is not only proven to whiten teeth up to eight shades, it is also completely safe. The whitening procedure has been perfected through years of experience to give you the whitest teeth in the safest possible way. Your gums are carefully protected with a special coating before Dr Kaunitz applies the whitening gel.

How long will the results last?

In-office teeth whitening results will last for several years if you follow the professional care advice we give you after every treatment. Smoking, drinking black tea and coffee, red wine, etc. can affect the longevity of the treatment. It is recommended that you continue to visit us on a regular basis for a professional cleaning as this helps maintain white teeth for longer and remove discolouration that builds up on the enamel of your teeth.

What does take-home teeth whitening involve?

Professional take-home whitening treatment can make your smile noticeably whiter and brighter, with maximum results in just 7 to 14 days. At Cremorne Dental Clinic, we make custom whitening trays to perfectly fit the contours of your teeth. This means you get the same bright results across your entire smile while protecting your gums at the same time.

What causes tooth discolouration?

There are a variety of factors that cause tooth discolouration, ranging from the food you eat and lifestyle choices you make such as smoking to things you have no control over like genetics. Stains begin on the tooth surface of the tooth and over time can become deeper, penetrating the enamel of your tooth and discolouring the dentin underneath. When the dentin becomes discoloured, the teeth appear yellowish in colour. There are a variety of factors that could lead to both internal and external tooth discolouration.

Some factors that cause discolouration are:

  • Food and drink – Your diet can have a huge effect on the colour of your teeth. Tea, coffee and wine can all stain your teeth, while eating particular fruits such as dark berries can also lead to discolouration.

  • Smoking – Smoking and chewing tobacco will stain your teeth. A sticky residue of chemicals including nicotine and tar in tobacco adheres to the tooth surface causing yellow discolouration.

  • Hygiene – Irregular brushing and flossing will lead to plaque build-up and staining of the enamel.

  • Age – Discolouration is a process that will naturally occur as the dentine layer of your teeth gets darker with age.

  • Enamel thickness – The thinner the enamel, the more yellow your teeth will appear. The thickness and appearance of enamel can be affected by genetic or developmental conditions. It can also be worn away by acid erosion or grinding and clenching.
